Shyam Benegal is a name in Indian Cinema that can never be eroded. He is one of the rarest genus of producers, who have wisely envisaged the Indian society and its problems. Due to his exceptional oeuvre of feature-films like Ankur, Nishantand Bhumika, a new genre emerged in Bollywood. It came to be known as the ‘parallel cinema’.
Benegal was awarded Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2007, he was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
He was awarded the V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Mumbai International Film Festival.
