CHILLING FACTS:

CHILLING FACTS: One in every 113 people on the planet is now a refugee. Around the world, someone is displaced every three seconds, forced from their homes by violence, war and persecution.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, by the end of 2016, the number of displaced people had risen to 65.6 million - more than the population of the United Kingdom. The number is an increase of 300,000 on the year before, and the largest number ever recorded!!!
Revisiting this stamp album I created in 2015..
Fundraising Stamps for Refugees after WWII
More than 700,000 refugees and migrants have reached the European Union, fleeing war and poverty in their homelands, since the beginning of 2015. EU leaders are grappling with the crisis as hundreds of new refugees and migrants continue to arrive daily. Going by the live visuals that are being transmitted into our homes - it appears that international response is still wanting.
One fact that gets repeated continuously is that "the current crisis is the worst such disaster since World War II.
Back in the 50s, an ambitious international response was initiated to find solutions. Various initiatives for fund raising were organized, including simultaneous issue of first-day covers and special stamps by more than 70 postal authorities around the world.
Between them the stamps tell the pathetic refugee story, beginning with the flight and despair, sometimes ending in new hope.
